Akarachi: Finding Her Strength on the Football Field
The final whistle had barely gone when Akarachi’s teammates rushed towards her.
She had just scored twice, created opportunities with her clever passing, and helped lead Kids-Off-The-Street Shelter FC to victory in the girls’ category of the Wings Academy Football Program Season 2 championship.
For Akarachi, it was more than a winning match. It was a moment that showed just how far her confidence, skill and determination could take her.
Akarachi joined the Kids-Off-The-Street Shelter when she was nine. Coming from a family of 10 children, she grew up in difficult circumstances where meeting basic needs and accessing education was a challenge.
But those circumstances did not define her. Akarachi loved singing and mathematics, and she carried a dream of becoming a nurse.
Then football became another avenue for her to grow.
Through the Wings Academy Football Program, powered by the Pistis Foundation in partnership with the Asumah Brothers, Akarachi joined a structured program combining football training with mentorship and personal development.
Over seven weeks, she trained alongside more than 100 young people from communities served by the program. She worked on ball control, passing, fitness, tactical play and teamwork, while learning the discipline and confidence that come from showing up, practising and playing as part of a team.
Her progress came alive on championship day.
Akarachi played with composure under pressure, scored two goals and helped create the chances that powered her team to the title. Her performance earned her the Tournament MVP/Best Player award in the female category.
The trophy was a visible achievement. But the deeper impact was less visible: a young girl learning to trust her abilities, take responsibility, work with others and see herself as someone capable of achieving difficult things.
Today, Akarachi still dreams of becoming a nurse. She is also carrying with her something the football field has helped strengthen: the confidence to pursue that dream.
