First UBOMI in Prisons: Integrated Medical Outreach at Kirikiri Correctional Facility

Behind prison walls, health found a voice: UBOMI 7.0 delivered urgent, compassionate care to 1,350 inmates at Kirikiri Correctional Facility, Apapa, Lagos from 11–13 September 2025, marking the first time UBOMI was held inside a correctional setting. Over three focused days the outreach recorded 1,749 diagnoses—led by 588 malaria and 586 scabies cases—and completed 7,503 medical interventions that combined clinical consultations, treatments and distributed supplies to meet pressing health needs across the Medium, Maximum and Female centres.
The outreach used a Mass Drug Administration (MDA) approach alongside case-by-case clinical care so teams could act quickly where high-burden conditions were identified. The pharmacy team carried out 3,521 dispensing events to ensure correct dosing and immediate treatment, volunteers distributed 1,752 medicated soaps and antifungal creams and 800 menstrual pads and toiletries, and counsellors provided 80 sessions of health education and psychosocial support.
UBOMI Kirikiri showed measurable impact and clear next steps: the integrated MDA-led model can quickly reduce disease burden while restoring dignity, and sustaining those gains will require follow-up support, periodic MDA cycles, continued hygiene provision and strengthened partnerships with public and private health actors. We invite donors, health partners and volunteers to join UBOMI in scaling this approach so the momentum from Kirikiri becomes lasting protection for people and communities.
UBOMI is a community-first medical and surgical outreach series driven by volunteers and strategic partners to bring free, high-quality healthcare to underserved populations. Prior to Kirikiri, the Ubomi Medical and Surgical Outreach had delivered over 30,000 free medical interventions since 2019, including life-changing procedures such as fibroid and hernia surgeries that restored health and hope for many beneficiaries. For UBOMI 7.0 we partnered with the Prisons Ministry of the Elevation Church and adapted our model for a congregate environment to deliver rapid, high-impact care with respect and dignity.
